About this experience

Join your host Yoshiko in her kitchen and learn to prepare 2-3 Japanese home style dishes from scratch! Yoshiko will have you start by showing you how to make dashi stock, the Japanese foundation that most dishes are based on. You will learn how to use dashi instead of water when preparing Japanese cuisine to bring out the umami flavor of each dish. You can expect the cooking portion of your experience to last about an hour before you sit down to enjoy the meal you helped prepare. Yoshiko will also share printed recipes with you, so you can recreate the dishes you learned at home. This is a wonderful way to get a glimpse into the life of a Japanese local and experience the country's culture and cuisine first-hand!

What to expect

Step into Yoshiko's home for a private Japanese home cooking class and experience the warmth of sharing a meal with a local family. Learn to prepare traditional, everyday dishes from scratch, including Yoshiko's flavorful dashi-based recipes, while discovering Japanese ingredients, cooking techniques, and food culture. After cooking together, sit down with Yoshiko to enjoy your homemade meal and conversation. Learn to prepare 2-3 Japanese home style dishes from scratch in Yoshiko’s kitchen. Yoshiko will start by showing you how to make dashi stock, the foundation for most Japanese dishes. Learn to use dashi instead of water when cooking to bring out the umami flavor of each dish. You can expect the cooking portion of your experience to last about an hour. Yoshiko will share printed recipes with you so you can recreate the dishes you learned. Please note that the experience ends at Yoshiko's home. Yoshiko offers one of 4 choices below (in the sample menu) for your meal. Please let her know your preference at least 3 days in advance so she can shop accordingly. If she doesn't hear from you, she will prepare option 1 (Mother's taste menu).
